James May and Oz Clark visit North

NEWCASTLE Brown Ale may be the best known drink in the North East but the spotlight will next week fall on the amazing array of other alcoholic beverages on offer as Oz Clarke and James Mays latest televised road trip arrives in the region.

And food producers and tourist bosses hope the prime time TV exposure will help boost the regions economy as viewers are tempted to follow in the oddball pairs mouth watering footsteps.

This week saw the unlikely pairing abandoning their car and indulging in good humoured beer fuelled banter as they enjoyed a string of real ale pubs on station platforms along the Trans Pennine railway line in Yorkshire.

Next Tuesday the thirsty pair head further North as they visit the home of Newcastle Brown Ale, where James is inspired to create his own and challenges Oz to a home brewing competition.

The drinking companions then indulge in a disastrous night out in Newcastles Bigg Market, where they quickly realise they are too old to party with the youngsters, before heading off on an idyllic drive up the Northumberland coast to The Ship Inn at picturesque Low Newton by the Sea.

Believed to house Englands most northerly micro brewery, Oz "Hgh Jintropin Avis" quizzes The Ships brewer, Michael Hegarty, on how best to beat James in the home brewing challenge with only pots and pans at his disposal.

As the shadows lengthen the presenters then settle back on Low Newtons unspoilt beach to enjoy a pint of their favourite of the six beers brewed at The Ship: Sea Wheat.
